What is the process of getting an implant?
Here’s what you need to know about implant placement — who qualifies, how the process works, and what you can expect every step of the way.
Are You a Candidate for Dental Implants?
Most healthy adults are eligible for dental implants. You may be a candidate if you:
Have one or more missing teeth
Want to avoid dentures or bridges
Have enough healthy jawbone (or are open to bone grafting)
Are free from untreated gum disease or infection
Do not smoke or are willing to quit during healing
Are in generally good health with no uncontrolled conditions (like diabetes)
Even if you’ve been told you’re not a candidate in the past, modern techniques like bone grafting and sinus lifts — both offered at Arboretum Implant Center — can make implants possible.
Step 1: Your Implant Consultation
Every patient journey at Arboretum Implant Center starts with a detailed, one-on-one consultation. During this visit, we’ll:
Review your medical and dental history
Take digital X-rays and 3D scans (CBCT)
Evaluate your jawbone and gum health
Discuss your goals and treatment options
Create a personalized plan and timeline
Go over pricing and financing options
We make sure you fully understand the process — no surprises, no pressure.
Step 2: Pre-Implant Preparation (If Needed)
Some patients may need additional procedures before implant placement, such as:
Tooth extraction if a damaged tooth is still present
Bone grafting to strengthen the jawbone
Sinus lift, if placing implants in the upper back jaw
Gum grafting for soft tissue support and aesthetics
These steps ensure the implant has a stable foundation and your final result looks and functions naturally.
Step 3: Implant Placement Surgery
Once you’re ready, the implant placement is done in-office under local anesthesia, with sedation available if needed. Here's how it works:
A small incision is made in the gum
A pilot hole is created in the bone
The titanium implant is placed securely
The gum is closed over the implant, or a healing cap is left visible
The procedure typically takes 30–60 minutes per implant. Afterward, you’ll be sent home with care instructions, pain management guidance, and a follow-up appointment is scheduled.
Step 4: Healing & Osseointegration
Over the next few months, your bone naturally fuses to the implant in a process called osseointegration. This creates a solid, long-lasting foundation for your restoration.
During this time, we closely monitor your healing and may fit you with a temporary tooth to maintain both aesthetics and function.
Step 5: Final Restoration
Once healing is complete, we:
Uncover the implant (if it was submerged)
Attach an abutment (connector)
Take digital impressions for your custom crown, bridge, or denture- the crown is made in our state-of-the-art in-house lab.
At your next appointment, we will secure your final restoration with precision fit and finish
The result: a permanent, fully functional tooth that looks and feels like your own.
